The video reminds us of the personal need to be aware of different cultural views, which can also help in business relationships.
Saudi Arabia began accepting ATA carnets on June 1st, 2024. They may expand categories in the future, at present carnets can be used for business exhibitions and fairs, or similar needs, such as meetings, or product demonstrations.
Carnets will be invaluable, in a country which holds a significant number of regional trade shows. Saudi Arabia is also due to host the World Expo in 2030, an event which will see Riyadh thrust into the spotlight.
ATA Carnet Procedures
ATA carnets are valid for up to 6 months. They are accepted for goods in freight and hand carried items, along with postal consignments, or shipments in transit.
Customs staff have been well trained and should be supportive. There is however a need to lodge a request to enter using an ATA carnet with the customs authorities, which can be done online via their official website.
Replacing lost carnets is feasible and extensions may be possible. In both cases, you will need to contact Saudi Customs before expiry.
Restrictions On Goods
In any country, an ATA carnet does not exempt the requirement to meet local laws. In Saudi Arabia, carnets can not be used for materials contrary to Islamic culture, pornography, distilling equipment, religious sculpture, or images, or any depicting nudity.
Prior approval from the Saudi authorities is required for live animals, films, videos, periodicals and books, particularly religious books. The same applies to wireless, or radio controlled equipment, products containing alcohol and archaeological artifacts.
Bearing those points in mind is worthwhile for personal items you take, which also need to be appropriate for entry.
A Business Opportunity
The Middle East’s largest country, with a GDP approaching two trillion pounds, is keen to diversify their economy. They are aware that dependence on oil, other minerals and agriculture has a limited life span.
Local businesses are keen to bring in skills, or equipment for technological and infrastructure development, along with supporting healthcare, or further education.
The country has already changed in recent years but opportunities are still there and the UK is respected. If we can help your goods travel to Saudi Arabia under an ATA carnet, please get in touch with our friendly support team.
