As far as we know, there are no customs posts in space, although one ATA carnet supported item is on the way out of our atmosphere.
The European Space Agency have provided a South Korean university with an advanced, portable magnetometer. Built to measure planetary magnetic fields and due to spend a few months orbiting the Earth.
With caring for the instrument vital, this travelled as hand luggage in a purpose built suitcase. A few extra tests were needed to meet security requirements, the main travel document simply a standard ATA carnet.
By the time the magnetometer has completed many orbits and finally headed home, we wonder if this will be record mileage for a carnet journey.
Across The Earth
A more earthly record was set in November by a documentary film crew from Dulwich. They were heading off on an environmental and wildlife shoot, to be based in Timaru, South Island, New Zealand.
At about 19,000 miles to the other side of the globe, that’s as far away from London as you can get, without a spaceship.
An adventurous 22 year old is building towards similar mileage. Following a backpack trip through Africa and Asia, he is setting off on a journey to Mongolia. The final destination is a member country of the carnet family, as are others along the way.
Interesting to note that he felt completing an ATA carnet helped prepare for the journey, ensuring the right inventory for comfort and safety. Attention to detail proving to be as much a benefit as a chore.
Sustaining Travel
Whilst they do require careful preparation, the examples above show how useful and flexible a passport for goods can be. Apart from providing ATA carnets, we just love them for their flexibility.
