Later Covid-19 variants have hit Vietnam but their initial reaction shows their ability to put systems in place and get their people behind them.
Vietnam are about to become the 7th ASEAN bloc nation to accept ATA carnets, with an official launch date of 1st May 2022. The result of careful planning and modernisation, which will help in a variety of ways with exports from the UK.
Brazil have taken the rare decision to go in the opposite direction and are ending ATA Carnet membership. No ATA carnets for Brazil can be issued after 31st December 2021, although any issued before then will remain valid for entry and exit.
Brazil’s Departure
We are sorry to see Brazil go, when their use of carnets had firmed up, with the system initially adopted for the Rio Olympics. A combination of events, not least the Covid-19 pandemic, left them unable to continue.
Brazil did see a brief suspension of carnet use in June 2021, before the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry took responsibility again for 6 months. The intention being to see if they could continue, or another guaranteeing association be found.
That has not been possible at present, although we hope they will rejoin in better times. In the interim, through Dynamic International and our links with GCL, we can offer support from skilled agents in Brazil.
A Welcome To Vietnam
The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry are ready to roll and looking forward to the May launch. Good to see another country join from the region, the carnet family has come a long way since a few, mainly European countries began the approach.
ATA carnets for Vietnam will initially be focused on exhibitions, fairs, or other business events. History of membership tells us that over time, the categories for use are likely to expand.
Vietnam’s Department of Customs wish to continue to implement solutions for business. Demonstrated by innovative approaches, which have helped with port congestion and recent meetings with European delegates, on trade facilitation.
We will keep you posted on developments in Vietnam and regions across the globe. By all means see our list of current ATA carnet countries.
